Our History

SCOPE ZAMBIA

Business Strategy & Research

SCOPE Zambia (Schools and Colleges Permaculture Programme) was established in 2016 by ReSCOPE as response to a growing recognition that permaculture provided sustainable development, environmental stewardship, and resilient livelihoods and must be rooted in knowledge, practice, and locally relevant solutions. The organisation emerged from a vision to introduce and strengthen permaculture principles within educational institutions, recognising schools and colleges as critical spaces for shaping long-term social, ecological, and economic transformation.

Earliest foundations

From its earliest foundations, SCOPE Zambia focused on translating sustainability from abstract concepts into practical, lived experience and using Integrated Land Use Design. Through demonstration sites, learning gardens, and participatory engagement, the organisation began supporting institutions and communities to better understand the interconnected relationships between food systems, ecosystems, and livelihoods.

Evolution

Over time, SCOPE Zambia’s work evolved beyond institutional learning spaces to embrace broader community and landscape-level approaches. This expansion reflected a deeper understanding that sustainable systems cannot be built in isolation. Schools, communities, and ecosystems form part of a shared environment, where resilience depends on integrated, regenerative practices. As climate variability, land degradation, and ecological pressures intensified, SCOPE Zambia strengthened its commitment to promoting permaculture, agroecology, and ecological restoration as practical pathways toward sustainability.
